[LIFE Plastic Surgery] Types of Breast Implants

Breasts complete the overall volume of the body and it is very important to know what type of implants are going to be inserted in your body.

LIFE before & After

Breast implants come in a variety of shapes, surface textures, and sizes.
Today I will classify breast implants into types:
- Cohesive Gel implant
- Saline Solution implant.

Cohesive Gel Implant

Cohesive gel implant, the one LIFE is using is approved for cosmetic use by the FDA, and it maintains its shape in an upright position which decreases the incidence of folding of the implant shell and the development of ripping.

This implant has 2 ~ 3 layers of shell surrounding the cohesive solution, and the greatest advantage of this implant is that even the implant ruptures due to its high cohesiveness, the solution does not get spilled into the surrounding breast tissue.

Advantages and disadvantages of Cohesive Gel Implant

Advantages:

1) Soft and natural feeling

2) Shell failures will occur less frequently, and there are no cases in which the gel diffused outside of the breast

3) Able to impart their shape upon the breast

Disadvantages:

1) Cohesive Gel implants require a slightly larger incision compared to saline implants

2) Incision through belly button is impossible

3) It is difficult to correct breast asymmetry since the shape and the size is standardized

Saline Solution Implant

Saline Solution implant which have been used mainly in the past, the size of the implant can be adjusted depending on the amount of saline solution injected.

Saline-filled implants come in different sizes and have either smooth or textured shells.
They are also used in revision surgeries, which correct or improve the result of an original surgery.

Advantages and disadvantages of Saline Solution implant

Advantages:

1) Saline solution implants are filled with sterile salt water. They are inserted empty, and then filled once they are in place so the incision is smaller

2) Incision through belly button is possible

3) If a saline implants leak, the sterile saline solution is absorbed by the body without harm

4) Saline implants are filled to a precise size by the doctor, so breast asymmetry correction is possible

Disadvantages:

1) Feel firmer

2) More likely of getting capsular contracture compared to Cohesive Gel implants

3) The size of the implant may reduce dramatically after damage of the implant

4) Saline solution may leak as time passes, causing the size of implant reduce and it does not have smooth touch.

Before getting breast augmentation, it is very important for each patient to discuss both types of implants with experienced surgeon and make decision.
